Streatham Village Market is back this Saturday

Streatham Village Market
Streatham Village Market is back again this month! The market will be on Saturday 28th September from 11am to 4pm on Babington Plaza above Streatham Green.

This month’s market will celebrate sustainability in Streatham as many local businesses are turning to greener initiatives.

There will be a variety of stalls offering vintage items, jewellery, clothing, food and more! As well as this you can find stalls offering advice and information on sustainability and local green initiatives.

Dr Bike will be on site between 12 and 2pm for small bike repairs and can advise on major repairs. Plastic Free Streatham will also have a stall where you can hear about their work with local businesses to reduce the use of single use plastics.

InStreatham have also announced they will be launching their electric cargo bike for businesses this month which will help towards reducing carbon emissions and easing traffic congestion in Streatham.

The next market will be on Saturday October 26th. Get in touch with InStreatham if you would like a stall.

Lewin Road to go car-free this Sunday

Lewin Road will be closed to cars this Sunday 22nd September as residents participate in Car Free Day 2019.

Car Free Day is an annual, global event aimed at championing traffic-free city centres, promoting active travel and changing attitudes to tackle deadly air pollution.

Vehicles will be banned from entering and waiting on the street on the 22nd. Five other streets across Lambeth, including Trinity Rise and Hurst Street, will also be closed.

Those participating in Car-Free Day this year are playing an important role in highlighting the climate crisis and toxic air pollution levels in Streatham.

Residents of Hambro Road and Pathfield Road host Play Streets

Councillors Nicole Griffiths and Scott Ainslie; Breathing Cities
Residents of Hambro Road and Pathfield Road will be closing their roads to traffic and hosting Play Streets on the following days:

  • Hambro Road, between No. 57 Hambro Road and No. 123 Hambro Road on Sunday 22nd September, Sunday 24th November 2019 and Sunday 26th January, Sunday 22nd March, Sunday 24th May and Sunday 26th July 2020 between 1 pm and 4 pm (alternative routes for vehicles will be available via Ellora Road and Natal Road and vice versa);
  • Pathfield Road, between Greyhound Lane and Rotherhill Avenue on Sunday 22nd September 2019 between 2 pm and 5 pm and monthly thereafter on a Sunday up to and including Sunday 20th September 2020 (alternative routes for vehicles will be available for vehicles via Greyhound Lane and Rotherhill Avenue and vice versa);

Play Streets allow local residents to reclaim their road for children to play in by temporarily closing them. The initiative also helps to tackle deadly air pollution by encouraging sustainable modes of travel and reducing emissions.

Air pollution contributes to 9,000 deaths each year in London with, on average, three adults and one child being hospitalised every day from breathing difficulties caused by pollution.

Green Party Councillor Nicole Griffiths said: “It’s great to see local communities taking action against air pollution and creating a safe environment, free of cars, for their children to play. Toxic air pollution is particularly damaging to young children. Play streets help in reducing their exposure to dangerous air pollutants whilst encouraging them to play outdoors.”

Green councillors win refurbishment for temporary accommodation

The hostel on Tooting Bec Gardens will be refurbished following concerns raised by the
St Leonard’s Green councillors.

Residents of the temporary accommodation had reported general disrepair of the hostel
as well as rodent infestations, damp and sewage on the ground floor. Some had also
requested to move due to reported drug use at the properties.

Green Party councillors took the Council’s Chief Executive to visit the hostel in December
last year to highlight the poor living conditions and the desperate need for refurbishment.

In a decision published on 5th August 2019 the Council announced they would “undertake
the partial external and internal refurbishment works to 10-22 Tooting Bec Gardens”.

Have your say on air pollution monitors in Streatham

Lambeth’s Sustainability team are currently developing plans to install new micro air quality monitoring stations across the borough and we need your help in identifying suitable locations for these.

As air pollution in Lambeth continues to reach dangerous levels, Green councillors have been campaigning for the installation of these monitoring stations which will measure Nitrogen Dioxide, PM10, PM2.5, Ozone, Temperature and relative Humidity in order to provide accurate data on hyper local air quality conditions.

St Leonard’s Green councillors now want to hear your suggestions for where the monitoring stations should be located to provide the most useful and reliable air quality data for Streatham’s residents.

Suggested monitoring station locations should be:

·         In close proximity to sensitive receptors (schools/ hospitals/ public spaces)
·         In air quality focus areas and sources of pollution (Town centres/ main roads/ major    developments)
·         Easily accessible on public land (preferably lamp posts on the highway)

Please send your ideas to Councillor Jonathan Bartley on jbartley@lambeth.gov.uk

Please note the monitoring stations will need a permanent power source. If you can provide as much of the following information as possible when submitting locations that would be great:

-          Google earth screen shot/link
-          Photograph of power source location
-          Street name and post code (where applicable)
-          Justification for inclusion i.e outside x school

Have your say on the proposed Controlled Parking Zones (CPZ) in Streatham

Following last year’s survey which showed many Streatham residents and business owners favoured the introduction of controlled parking zones the Stage 1 consultation begins today. The Council is consulting residents and businesses in St Leonard's ward and Streatham Vale West, as this area already experiences severe parking issues due to the rail station and could not withstand any further pressure from any displacement of a possible St Leonard’s CPZ.

A newsletter has been sent to every household with details of the proposals. The letter  contains a unique reference number (URN) allowing you to complete and submit the online survey using the link provided www.lambeth.gov.uk/stlcpz by the consultation closing date of 30 September 2019

What is a CPZ?
A controlled parking zone is an area where parking restrictions favour the needs of residents, their visitors and any local businesses. All of the kerbside is marked either as a parking bay or as a yellow line. Parking bays are only marked where safety, access and sight lines are not compromised. A sign beside each bay explains what restrictions apply in terms of who can park there, at what times (the “controlled hours”) and for how long. Yellow lines are marked where they either improve road safety or enable traffic to pass.

A single yellow line means no parking is allowed during part of the day whilst double yellow lines mean no parking at any time. The operational times for single yellow lines are indicated on signs as drivers enter the zone.

Subject to adhering to the Highway Code and there being no loading restrictions, drivers may stop on a single or double yellow line to load or unload goods for a limited period of time.

For detailed results of the primary survey conducted last year broken down into individual roads and the decision report which includes information on plans for the phase 2 consultation of the remaining roads in the Streatham South area in 2020, you can visit the survey webpage at www.lambeth.gov.uk/streathamcpz

To view detailed maps showing how the proposals may affect you and to have your say on the proposals please visit the council website at, www.lambeth.gov.uk/stlcpz.

Alternatively, you can telephone 020 7926 6799 to request a paper copy of the map showing the detailed proposals where you live and a questionnaire with pre-paid return postage. Please mention St Leonard's or Streatham Vale West when you leave your message.

A copy of the maps can also be found at Brixton and Tate Streatham Libraries

Residents are invited to speak to officers at the CPZ Exhibition / Drop In Session on Saturday, 7 September 2019 at Tate Library,
63 Streatham High Rd, Streatham, London SW16 1PN
between 10am and 4pm.
