Reprieve for historic Streatham Hill Theatre

Some great news from Friends of Streatham Hill Theatre - the Art Deco bingo hall on Streatham Hill that in its hay day helped give Streatham its reputation as the West End of South London.
Lambeth Council has approved its nomination of the theatre as an Asset of Community Value. This means that the community has an opportunity to buy the premises should the owner wish to sell to anyone at all. The Friends group has a vision to return the building to its former glory as an arts centre and creative hub.

The Theatres Trust placed Streatham Hill Theatre on their Theatres at Risk register in 2018, stating fears that development of the site for flats or offices could lead to the loss of a "sleeping beauty" of the theatre world.

David Harvey, chair of FoSHT says: "All this means that we need to get started on our first campaign - to raise funds, seek grants and work on our feasibility plan to determine if we can create our vision of an arts and creative centre for Streatham based in Streatham Hill Theatre, either with another operator or by ourselves.

"We need active volunteers with time, motivation and skills in fund raising, PR, commercial property, law, the arts, business etc. etc. to join our Action Campaign Team to take us to the next stage."
